As you might know in August 2010 we went on holiday to the United States. We went to see a baseball game my son was so thrilled to see the game and he wanted to play. What would be better in THE baseball nation of the world. As a present he received a ball and glove and from that moment he could not be stopped.

When we arrived back in the Netherlands he had to go to the local baseball club. He still had to do a sport so we signed him up to play.

Wanna see him play? look here.

Exposure

today i have read an article about young companies.
As i am a starting photographer i do need exposure.
i have a first job, and i do not really know what i want to specialize in as photographer.

What the also say is " you am what you shoot" and clients will hire you for what you shoot.

say i want to do weddings that would be my main goal to shoot weddings, and show that i shoot weddings in every medium that is possible, prints, websites, portfolio, twitter, facebook, etc

the same counts for everything else.

the problem for me lies that i do not know what i am going to specialize in, at the moment it generalizes around people. i am a people shooter. this means that i want to make photographs that touches people that connects and that the person that looks at the photo connects with it.

that can be done in multiple things,

portraits is a very important one. the person sits directly in front of you,
documentary photography is all what i have done so far. documenting my own life. putting some on flickr. and my own site.
fashion can also be a choice, but it is more static but has a big challenge and that is artificial light inside the studio or on the street.

all in all, at the moment street photography attracts me the most but does not give me enough exposure.

what i need is attention to my photography. that people see them that i can attract people to my images and sell them. Maybe some editorials would be good also.

at the moment my photo's can be found at www.grasfotografie.com and at flickr

but i need to connect, to show and to make sure i get the exposure that i need to get this from the ground. It will be hard, painful but in the end it will be so worth it.

who's gonna help me?

Struggling!

I am just struggling. Next week the last part of my photography training will start the part that you specialize in certain part of photography. The problem is that i like some much of different photography.

if it is architecture, landscape, food or sports, streetphotography, portrait, fashion, wedding.

but what i experienced is that i always want the person to be in the photograph. That connection of the person that is going to look at the photo with what the photograph will be is what inspires me. the emotion, that eye contact.

i will have a hard time next week in deciding what it will be. we'll see.

Husband & Wife

When we were harvesting carrots from the beautiful vegetable garden of a friend of mine we found this lovely couple. Aren't they sweet!

Magnum Photo books

Photobooks created by the photographers from magnum are some of the most beautiful and collected books around. Personally i always have a few on my wishlist!

enjoy a presentation of photobooks narrated by the photographers themselves.

Trent Parke and Narelle Autio about Dreamlives

As some of you know i really admire some of the photographers from magnum. I just came across this movie about trent parke and narelle autio.

go and look at it here.

010 - foto rotterdam

Yesterday, on dutch television, Het uur van de wolf.

a portrait of 5 dutch photographers from Rotterdam.

Ari Versluis and Ellie Uyttenbroek with their multiple portraits on one canvas
Gerco de Ruijter with his beautiful landscape photographed from a kite
Hans Wilschut, His landscape photography from the port of rotterdam is just stunning
Janine Schrijver, with her beautiful photography of the people of rotterdam
Rince de Jong, with her photography of the dogs of rotterdam

Look at the movie at uitzendinggemist.nl

NIDF Norm for Photographers and others

I just came around the NIDF norm, The NIDF (Nederlands Instituut voor Digitale Fotografie) is an institute that helps dutch photographers use and maintain their knowledge about digital photography and they created a norm that combines existing ISO standards and other international standards. It is in Dutch but very useful as it is a guideline in using and maintaining the digital image library.

See it on the site of the NIDF here.

Movies from Nikon School by Joe McNally

As you might know i am a Canon shooter. But Canon does not do anything for young photographers as Nikon does.
Nikon has nikon school and give something to their users.

Recently i found some movies made by Joe McNally for Nikon about using speedlights to form light. What for me was important was how Joe McNally starts up his assignment and does his lightning. He uses Nikon tools but it is easy to translate to Canon.

There are 2 links about color control they are here and here and a cool assignment using repeated flashes can be found here

enjoy.

Daily doses of Photojournalism

As a photographer with passion for great pictures and a good story there are a few sites that i visit regularly if not daily. For the stories, for the pictures or just because something new was added, All in great quality.

1. Burn Magazine a photoblog by Magnum photographer David Alan Harvey
2. The boston globe's the big picture
3. New York Times Lens Blog
